FORGENIUS Public Webinars Fifth edition - EarthMap: climate and environmental monitoring
External Meeting
Place: Online
FORGENIUS project will host the fifth edition of its Public Webinars on 12 December 2024, from 15:00 to 16:00 CET. This series aims to bring FORGENIUS topics and results to a wider audience.
Our feature speaker, Mr. Giulio Marchi, will present Earth Map, a powerful no-code tool that harnesses Google Earth Engine to simplify climate and environmental monitoring. This platform offers users a seamless point-and-click interface for multi-parameter, multi-scale, and multi-temporal analysis. Mr. Marchi will also explore Earth Map's customized applications, including Strata, a UNEP-FAO initiative for climate security analytics, and WHISP, an open-source solution for forest monitoring and deforestation compliance.
Dr. Marjana Westergren, a FORGENIUS project member, will present "Environmental, physiological, modelled and genetic indicators: characterising Genetic Conservation Unit (GCU) diversity, distinctiveness and vulnerability." Her presentation will highlight how these indicators were selected through a collaborative consultation process among FORGENIUS researchers from diverse disciplines. This effort ensured that the chosen indicators best describe forest genetic resources in terms of their genetic diversity, distinctiveness, and vulnerability.
Join us to discover how these innovative tools and approaches are bridging the gap between data abundance and actionable insights while advancing our understanding of GCUs, genetic diversity, and forest ecosystems.
We look forward to welcoming you to this webinar and exploring these transformative tools together!

FORGENIUS Public Webinars - Fourth edition
External Meeting
The FORGENIUS project will host the fourth edition of its Public Webinars on 7 May 2024 at 14:00 CEST. The aim of this series of events is to bring FORGENIUS topics and results to a wider audience.
Our feature speaker, Dr. Thibaut Capblancq, is an evolutionary biologist working as a postdoctoral researcher at the University of Grenoble, France. He will address the fact that species often exhibit intraspecific adaptive variation, and climate change will therefore not affect all populations with the same intensity. The integration of genomic information into predictions of species maladaptation to climate change is rapidly gaining interest in the literature to account for such intraspecific variation. One metric that has received particular attention is the genomic offset. Dr. Capblancq will present the genomic offset approach in detail, as well as its main applications and relevant limitations of the metric.
Project member Dr. Elia Vajana is a postdoctoral fellow at the Institute of Biosciences and Bioresources, CNR, Italy. He will talk about a recent study that analyzed 54 indigenous sheep breeds from Europe, North Africa, and the Middle East using advanced genetic techniques. This research identified genetic variations linked to local adaptation and predicted vulnerability to climate change. The study highlights genes linked to water retention and energy management as crucial for sheep to adapt to various climates. Interestingly, the analysis suggests southwestern Europe as a potential area of concern due to higher genomic vulnerability, warranting specific conservation efforts.
Join us to learn more about powerful tools that can predict species vulnerability to climate change and a real-world example.
We look forward to welcoming you to this webinar and sharing these experts’ perspectives!
FORGENIUS Public Webinars - Third edition
External Meeting
The FORGENIUS project will host the third edition of its Public Webinars on 11 March 2024 at 14:00 CET. The aim of this series of events is to bring FORGENIUS topics and results to a wider audience.
Project member Dr. Nicolas Martin will talk about how his work seeks to evaluate the potential risks and resilience of forests to drought stress induced by climate change by developing hybrid methods based on mechanistic modelling but leveraging different knowledge and data sources (such as remote sensing, plant-hydraulics traits, and ecohydrology theory). Dr. Martin will also introduce the feature speaker Dr. Philippe Ciais.
Dr. Ciais will address how high-resolution satellite data enable tree level carbon monitoring at national and global scales. Moreover, he will discuss how machine learning models allow the fusion of satellite data into maps of forest attributes and how these can be used with ground data to attribute forest disturbances to driving factors. Dr. Ciais will summarize the most relevant advances highlighting their application towards consistent tree biomass monitoring systems, monitoring carbon losses and carbon gains from restoration and forest degradation, ultimately supporting the mitigation of climate change.
We look forward to welcoming you to this webinar and sharing these experts’ perspectives!

FORGENIUS Public Webinars - Second edition
External Meeting
The FORGENIUS project will host the second edition of its Public Webinars on 21 November at 10:00 CET. The aim of this series of events is to bring FORGENIUS topics and results to a wider audience.
Project member Dr. Nassim Belmokhtar will talk about the advances obtained by FORGENIUS assessing the potential of Near Infrared Spectroscopy technology associated to chemometric approaches for the development of predictive models as part of the project’s work on high-throughput phenotyping. These accurate models can then be used to ensure an extensive phenotypic trait mapping on whole European forest GCUs. Dr. Belmokhtar will also introduce the feature speaker Dr. Matthew Robson.
Dr. Robson will address how intensive phenotyping of ecophysiological traits allows for trait-based species distribution modelling. Moreover, understanding canopy-level light use efficiency and the traits that determine this according to light fluctuations in the canopy is the key to predicting how forests will respond to future changes in light conditions.
We look forward to welcoming you to this webinar and sharing these experts’ perspectives!
FORGENIUS Public Webinars - First edition
External Meeting
Place: Online
The FORGENIUS project will host the first edition of its Public Webinars on 27 October at 14:00 CEST. The aim of this series of events is to bring FORGENIUS topics and results to a wider audience.
Project member Dr. Nicolas Martin will talk about the advances obtained by FORGENIUS on the potential role of intraspecific variability in drought resistance traits in shaping intraspecific drought resistance of tree species. Nicolas will also introduce the feature speaker Dr. Xavier Morin.
Dr. Morin will address how the impact of climate change varies across forests, depending on their composition, structure and age. He will also review the state-of-the-art regarding the tree diversity effects on forest functioning and properties, and present perspectives to better understand these tree diversity effects, including at the intraspecific level.
We look forward to welcoming you to this webinar and sharing these experts’ perspectives!
Link to join event will be shared on the day of the event.
