FORGENIUS takes center stage at Forest Europe Expert Level Meeting

FORGENIUS and EUFORGEN unveiled two strategic innovations at the Forest Europe Expert Level Meeting in Stockholm: a new liaison role to broaden participation and a genetic conservation indicator to enhance dynamic monitoring of native species.

At the Forest Europe Expert Level Meeting (ELM) in Stockholm, FORGENIUS showcased its leadership in forest genetic conservation, unveiling strategic innovations that are shaping the future of sustainable forest management across Europe.

Led by Ivan Scotti of INRAE, FORGENIUS presented key achievements that are transforming how forest genetic resources are accessed and understood. From advanced genetic characterisation protocols to a decision-maker-friendly information system, the project is driving a data revolution in forest conservation.

A major highlight was the upgraded EUFGIS platform, the cornerstone for geo-referenced data on genetic conservation units. Ivan Scotti walked the audience through its new functions, offering a teaser ahead of the public release in November. He also laid out a vision for how the European Commission and individual countries could build on this momentum to enrich EUFGIS data content and strengthen forest policy frameworks.

While EUFORGEN’s Phase VII strategy (2025–2029) introduced a new liaison role to broaden participation, ensuring that forest genetic conservation is not only collaborative, but actionable.

Together, these efforts mark a turning point for forest policy in Europe, laying the groundwork for inclusive, data-driven, and resilient forest ecosystems.
